The way to find out is to connect the battery to a resistive load say, about 20 ohms. Your pack may have just been left off the charger too long and you may have fixed it. There are many tricks around for "repairing" bad NiCad cells but I'm here to tell you that they don't work well or for long. What happens to these power packs is that one or more of the 1.5 volt cells either shorts or reverses polarity. In order to get 18VDC the manufacturer puts 12 of them in series. Although I still may find out I can only drill 3 holes per charge or something like that if the battery is worn out after allĪs you may know, the basic NiCad cell supplies 1.5 volts. It has potentially saved me from buying a new battery when I may not need one. It might not work for everybody, but I thought I'd share that trick just in case somebody else has the same problem. I put the battery back in the Craftsman charger, and sure enough, it charged normally It would only draw about half an amp, but sure enough, after 30 minutes, it had about 15V. I figured out a way to connect a 2 amp charger to the battery and plugged it in for 30 minutes. Someone claimed that the battery charger supplied with the tool couldn't recharge a completely dead battery that had been sitting for a long time, but connecting the battery to a small car battery charger for half an hour would bring the voltage up enough to where the tool's battery charger could recharge it again. While searching for the cheapest place to find a replacement battery, I found a tip in a comment thread for the replacement battery listed on Sears's website. I put it on the charger and was dismayed to see that both the yellow and green light were on at the same time, meaning the charger was telling me the battery was shot. The battery was almost totally dead, down to about 3.6V according to my multimeter. I picked up a Craftsman 18V drill, light, and circular saw a couple days ago really cheap.
